Ask any tourist what they think of when they hear "Mexico" and most will say Acapulco, Cancun, Puerto Vallarta. For the sun worshippers these are the more popular destinations because of their seaside locations. Mexico City is well known for its bustling markets, outdoor cafes, culture and historical sites. But there is another destination that is becoming more and more popular with both tourists, and the Mexican people themselves. The city of Merida...a place that offers the authentic taste of Mexico, right in the heart of the Yucatan Peninsula.
Known as The White City because of the many white painted buildings, Merida was originally founded by a Spaniard, Francisco de Montejo, on January 6, 1542. Merida was built on a large Mayan city originally known as T'ho. Today, modern Merida is the capital and largest city of the Mexican state of Yucatan and the Yucatan Peninsula. It is considered to be one of the most tranquil and safe cities in Mexico, despite the ever increasing population of 1,658,210. Its geographic location makes it an excellent base for those who love to explore surrounding villages, Mayan pyramids, haciendas and beaches. The people of Merida and the Yucatan are warm and hospitable, and very proud of their heritage.

This charming colonial city has much to do and see. Paseo Montejo is Merida's main avenue, lined with beautiful old buildings, monuments, and exquisite 19th century mansions. A horse-drawn carriage will take you back in time to discover historical sites such as the Cathedral of San Idelfonso, built in 1561 - 1599, the oldest cathedral on the American continent. Directly across is the Town Hall built in 1735. On the south side is Casa de Montejo, the former home of the conqueror of Yucatan, which was built in 1542. Handcraft markets and street festivals proudly show Yucatecan's dress and dance, music and folklore, and make up the lively charisma of Merida.
There are close to twenty hotels and Bed & Breakfasts in the downtown area of Merida. Some of the newer hotels, such as Hotel Casa San Angel, have uniquely combined Old World charm with modern conveniences such as internet and plasma TV's. This gem of a hotel catches your eye as soon as you walk in and see the beauty of the Mexican architecture and décor, and taste the home-made Yucatecan cuisine. No need to go out on Saturday evenings, the entertainment comes to you! Outside, the street is closed off to traffic on the weekend so you can sit and enjoy the colourful traditional Mexican dancing and singing. And all for free! Along the same street you can stroll through a wonderful market where local merchants sell traditional handcrafted items.
Merida's great location allows visitors to take magnificent day trips to world famous Mayan pyramids, beaches, colonial cities, caves and cenotes, which are only one to two hours drive across the Yucatan Peninsula. The fishing village of Progreso and its tranquil beaches is an even shorter drive to the north coast along the Gulf of Mexico. Here you can enjoy the most delicious fresh fish caught in the Gulf and grilled to perfection. Southwest of Merida on the coast is the village of Celestun where a boat excursion takes you to see hundreds of flamingos. From March to August these beautiful pink flamingos leave their nests of the Rio Lagartos Reserve and fly to the waters of Celestun to eat the rich plankton there, creating an island of pink.
To the east of Merida the famous Mayan pyramids of Chichen Itza, dating back 1,553 years, are just one of the ruin sites accessible to tourists. On July 7, 2007 these pyramids were named one of the new 7 Wonders of the World, putting Yucatan in the eyes of the world. The town of Cuzama is the place to go to see "cenotes", natural underground sinkholes resembling caves. A buggy on rails pulled by horses takes you through adventurous paths to the Three Cenotes located there. Visiting a cenote is an adventure unto itself! Only for the sure-footed, you climb down steep steps into a magnificent underground cave complete with stalactite and stalagmite formations. You'll swim in crystal clear blue fresh water deep enough to dive into from the rocky ledges of the cave walls. The sun peeps in through openings overhead giving enough light to see the spectacular surroundings.
The drive from Merida through the Yucatan countryside shows life of the local people living in their small villages and towns. Many live in thatched roofed huts and make their living selling fruits and vegetables at a road-side stand, or fishing. Inside the huts are hammocks, used for sleeping instead of mattresses because they are cooler to sleep in and can be put away during the day. School is free for children in Mexico, but they are required to wear uniforms and must buy their own supplies and books.
The warm, tropical temperature of Merida is another attraction for travellers. The average annual temperature is a lovely 28° celsius inviting an escape from long, harsh winters. Unlike the more northern areas of the world, here there are only two seasons: rainy and dry. The Yucatan's dry season, which lasts from November to May, brings the most pleasant weather. The average temperatures are lower, as is the humidity. The hot, humid rainy season lasts from May to October and may occasionally bring severe weather, such as hurricanes. It can rain every day, especially along the coast, although in the heat of the Yucatan summer, the cooling rain can be a blessing.
